I love trying to recreate my favorite takeout dishes. Beef and broccoli is on almost every Chinese takeout menu (even if it isn’t an authentic Chinese dish).
I used strip steak because it’s what I had. I buy a lot of my meat from costco, and these gorgeous strip steaks are sold in big 4 packs. We are only a family of two so we generally end up freezing at least 2 steaks. A tip to get thin and even slices is to cut the steak while it is still slightly frozen. If you’re starting with fresh beef just pop it in the freezer for an hour or so. Sirloin or flank steak would be suitable cuts of beef to use in this recipe.
This dish comes together quickly so it is perfect for a weeknight, and will cost a lot less than delivery!
Cut broccoli into bite size pieces. Thinly slice steak, about a 1/4 inch thick.
Combine 4 tbsp soy sauce, and 4 tablespoons mirin. Marinate beef strips for at least 30 minutes.
While beef is marinating, add 1/2 cup beef broth to wok or large pan over medium high heat. Add broccoli and cover to steam, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, drain, and set aside.
While broccoli is steaming, make the sauce. Mix together 4 tbsp soy sauce, 4 tbsp mirin, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 1/2 tsp sesame oil, 1/2 tsp garlic, 1/2 tsp ginger, and 1 tbsp cornstarch. Reserve for later use.
Wipe clean the pan used to cook the broccoli, and heat 1 tsp of oil over medium high heat. In batches, sear steak slices about 1 minute per side. Set steak aside.
Lower heat to medium low and add sauce mixture. Add broccoli and steak slices cook for about 2 minutes or until sauce has thickened.
Serve over rice, sprinkle with sesame seeds
